Moneynet.co.uk said that most debit cards charge a conversion fee of between 2.75 and 2.99 per cent on withdrawals or payments abroad on top of a flat fee for withdrawals and purchases of between £1.50 and £5.00 per transaction.
The website recommended that consumers get a debit card from Nationwide Building Society, which charges one of the lowest transaction fees.
It added: "With sterling taking a hammering against both the Euro and US dollar in the last 12 months, your summer holiday is going to seem expensive enough as it is without having to shell out a packet on debit card charges too."
Recently, the chief executive of a currency trading website recommended that people change their money before heading off to the airport, as many last minute bureaus de change charge over the odds for conversions.
