AA: Car scrappage scheme will help ailing auto industry

The AA has repeated its calls for the government to introduce a car scrappage scheme, claiming it will not only help UK motorists and the environment but will also aid the ailing auto industry.

Official statistics show that the number of new cars produced in the UK has fallen by 57 per cent since last year, according to the AA's president, Edmund King.

He added: "Car scrappage schemes in countries such as Germany are already having a positive effect on sales."

Car scrappage schemes offer motorists incentives to trade in older, less-environmentally friendly cars for brand new models.

Mark Huggins, director of AA Personal Loans, said: "A scrappage proposal ticks all the right boxes. I believe it would be a popular move."

Recently however, George Monbiot, an influential environmental activist and Guardian columnist, criticised the schemes, claiming they are "nothing but handouts for car firms, resprayed green".
