Cats and dogs 'can't escape the credit crunch'

Even cats and dogs are not immune from the effects of the global economic crisis, according to research conducted by Sainsbury's Bank.

The supermarket financial services provider calculated that 836,000 pet owners have stopped taking their domestic animals for regular check-ups at the vet because they can no longer afford it.

Sainsbury's Bank also found that 247,000 people in the UK have had to refuse veterinary treatment for their sick dog or cat or worse still, have had to have their animal put to sleep.

Joanne Mallon, Sainsbury's Pet Insurance manager, said: "One way to make sure your beloved dog or cat doesn't suffer is to make sure that you have adequate insurance cover should they have an accident or fall ill."

Recently, pet insurance provider PetPlan published research which revealed that common recurring problems for dogs can cost as much as £1,000 per year in veterinary bills.
