Brits 'shunning cash in favour of investments'

A new survey has shown that most people in the UK would choose to invest money if they had it, rather than keep it as cash.

The poll, conducted by The Motley Fool, asked Brits what they would do with a £50,000 windfall if they received one unexpectedly. The vast majority of people, 88 per cent, said they would invest the money rather than keeping it as cash.

Despite the falling value of many shares and the continuing downward spiral in house prices, property and shares came out on top of the tables as the most popular forms of investment.

The Motley Fool said: "Traditionally a pile of cash provides great comfort and security in times of severe market volatility."

However, the website's director David Kuo, added: "Cash is no longer king in the eyes of investors. It has been relegated to the status of pauper."

Recently, the value of the pound has fallen against other major currencies, including the dollar and the euro.
