Money worries forcing Britons to put off dental treatment

Around half of all Britons have put off visiting the dentists over the past year as they worry about the possible cost of treatment, new research has found.

The latest Annual Dental Survey conducted by Simplyhealth found that the proportion of people struggling to find an NHS dentist has grown from 23 per cent to 35 per cent over the past year alone.

However, while many have opted to take out private health insurance and opt out of NHS treatment, others have put off treatment due to money worries, with this particularly the case in London.

Commenting on the findings, Abby Bowman from Simplyhealth said: "The NHS dental contracts introduced three years ago were supposed to give more people access to dentists, but as our research shows this is only getting worse.

"As the economic downturn continues, we may see more people turn to Healthplans that help people prepare for unexpected health problems and spread the cost of dental bills."

Meanwhile, a poll of employers carried out by Opinion Matters has revealed that 71 per cent of bosses believe companies should take responsibility for the oral health of their workers.
