M&S Money reveals Britons looking for best-value holiday destinations

Despite the current economic downturn, many Britons are still determined to take a holiday, with traditional destinations set to lose out to more adventurous ones this summer, it has been revealed.

According to new research carried out by M&S Money, around one in three British holidaymakers looks into currency exchange rates when choosing an overseas destination.

Given this, the study also found that financially-savvy travellers are looking outside of the costly eurozone, with sales of the Egyptian pound having risen by 46 per cent over the past three month, while sales of Turkish lira are also up by 20 per cent on last year.

Furthermore, Iceland's economic troubles look set to make it one of this summer's top short-haul destinations, with this trend likely to be mirrored in trips to Mexico and South Africa.

James Yerkess, M&S travel money manager, commented: "The falling value of the pound in the past year means that holidaymakers are looking around for resorts where they are getting more for their money.

"Brits still want to enjoy a holiday, but they are being more selective about where they go."

At the same time, however, tourism minister Barbara Follett has launched a campaign aimed at encouraging Britons to give their finances a break and holiday at home this year.
