Homeowners still neglecting garden insurance, M&S Money study finds

As many as two in three green-fingered Brits have failed to check whether their gardens are insured, new research has found.

With millions of homeowners getting back into their gardens as spring kicks in, it is estimated that they will be tending to plants and flowers worth an average total of £721.

However, according to M&S Money, just one-third of all householders will think to check whether their gardens are insured, despite the fact that 17 per cent of those polled revealed that they know someone who has had plants, shrubs or even trees stolen from their property.

What's more, around ten per cent of homeowners are estimated to have seen their gardens maliciously vandalised, with this problem particularly acute in Wales.

Judith Roberts, M&S insurance manager, said: "Householders often spend thousands of pounds securing their home to protect their family and property.

"However, despite the huge amount of time and money invested in many gardens, security levels are often very poor, making them an attractive target for thieves and vandals."

Just last month, the British College of Osteopathic Medicine warned gardeners to warm up before getting stuck in, especially after a long winter break.
