Halifax savings account to help build Christmas funds

Called the 2009 Christmas Saver, the account is aimed at fostering saving habits among users of social banking services.
The product pays at a rate of 3.02 per cent AER or three per cent gross and will mature on October 31st. Halifax claims it will reduce the burden of household expenses at an expensive time of year for those who invest.
Savers will be able to make monthly deposits of between £5 and £200, with a maximum balance of £1,200. The bank will be writing to 70,000 social banking customers about the scheme.
"By putting a small amount aside each month in the run up to Christmas, customers will be able to reduce their financial hangover in the new year," commented Flavia Palacios Umana, head of Halifax savings products.
Halifax recently passed on the Bank of England's 0.5 percentage point cut to interest on to its mortgage customers.
