Consumers on '0% commission' exchange rates

Many consumers are being misled by offers of zero per cent commission on currency exchanges, according to FairFX.com.

The prepaid currency card provider claims that only 16 per cent of consumers realise that the best deals are not only dependent on commission but also on the exchange rate itself and other fees.

In contrast, 37 per cent believe that zero commission means the company is not making a profit from the service and 23 per cent think that companies do not charge commission but add in additional fees.

"People believe they are getting superior pricing because of 'zero per cent commission' advertising. But in reality the lack of transparent charging means consumers can't see the true cost of the transaction," said Stephen Heath, chief executive of FairFX.com.

Meanwhile, M&S Money has revealed that sales of the Egyptian pound have risen by 46 per cent over the past quarter as holidaymakers look beyond the eurozone for cheaper destinations.
