Home insurance warning from esure

Householders have been advised to step up their garden security measures to ensure they do not fall victim to opportunistic thieves.

As the warmer weather approaches, many Brits are likely to be spending more time in their gardens, which means they are likely to start using and leaving expensive equipment behind them.

Home insurance provider esure has therefore reminded people that thieves target gardens as well as the inside of houses, on the prowl for some valuable outdoors items.

This comes after a survey conducted by the company found that 93 per cent of people regularly leave the likes of jet washers, garden tools and kids' toys out in the garden overnight.

Head of risk and underwriting at esure Mike Pickard advised: "Taking a few simple steps can reduce the chances of becoming a victim of garden crime - such as the use of security lighting or prickly hedging as deterrents."

The firm has also issued a warning to householders who intend to spend time tidying up their garden over the Easter holidays to make sure any bonfires they light to burn debris are carefully controlled.
