AA Insurance pleased with police figures

The AA has described recent figures released by police, which refer to the number of uninsured motorists caught driving, as "good news".

This comes after forces across the country collectively clocked more than 170,000 offending drivers in 2008, compared with only 78,000 in 2006.

Director of AA Insurance Simon Douglas explained that this is down to the success of the new automatic number plate registration systems on police cars, which scan a vehicle, matching it up to the Motor Insurers' Database to see whether it is insured.

"Accidents caused by uninsured drivers cost over £500 million per year. This is met by the insurance industry - adding an average of nearly £30 to the annual premium of every honest motorist," he added.

This comes after a survey conducted by AA Driving School revealed that driving habits are likely to be passed through the generations from parents teaching their children to drive.

Indeed, 52 per cent of novice drivers have admitted to preferring their dads as instructors to their mums.
