Care for animals 'goes out the window in cost cutting drive'

Recent research by a pet insurance company suggests that the UK's reputation as a nation of animal lovers may be going out the window during the recession.

More Than Pet Insurance, which conducted the study, found that over two-thirds of pet owners in the UK would not be prepared to give up "life's little luxuries" such as dining out in order to pay for unexpected vet fees.

The insurer calculated that this could lead to more than 780,000 domestic animals - including over 200,000 dogs - being put down rather than receiving treatment as it is cheaper.

Peter Markey, head of marketing for More Than, said: "Times are tough at the moment and the research shows that our pets are amongst the first to feel the bite."

Recently, PetPlan claimed that cutting veterinary pet insurance could prove to be a false economy during the recession, as vet bills are often expensive.
