Norwich Union: Recession may increase drivers' risks

The car insurance provider estimated that around ten per cent of accidents in the UK are caused by driver fatigue, a figure which could increase during the recession.
Mike Smith, commercial motor technical manager at Norwich Union, explained that as employees come under increasing pressure to work longer hours, they may find themselves driving home more tired than they would usually be.
He added: "Driving whilst tired means reaction times are slower and vigilance, alertness, concentration and the quality of decision-making are severely affected."
Norwich Union is the UK's largest general insurance provider – it claims to insure around 15 per cent of the total general insurance market in the country.
