Brits 'shy away from investing in shares'

Many people in the UK are shying away from investing in shares, according to statistics released by Barclays Financial Planning recently.

The bank conducted a survey which shows that 71 per cent of the UK population would not invest in shares in the next year as they consider market conditions to be unfavourable.

Half of these people believe that the market will remain volatile. Just over one-third of them claim that they see the currently low prices of many shares as a good opportunity, but consider the markets to be too risky to invest in.

Alison Tattersall, head of customer and proposition at Barclays Financial Planning, said: "We can clearly see that there is a lack of confidence in the market and little faith that stability will return soon, but there are people out there who can help consumers discuss viable alternatives and weather the storm."

She recommended consulting an independent financial adviser (IFA). Price comparison site Fairinvestment.co.uk also recently recommended that customers contact an IFA about spring cleaning their finances.
