Consumers criticise energy firms on 'incorrect bills'

Energy companies are worse than HM Revenue and Customs and banks for giving inaccurate bills to consumers, it is believed.

Price comparison and switching service uSwitch discovered that people believe energy firms to be the worst offenders when it comes to getting their bills wrong.

It is the third year in a row that energy suppliers have scooped the dubious honour, beating other institutions such as council tax departments and mobile phone firms.

Differences between estimates and actual reading of meters have caused nearly 11 million people to find themselves owing unexpected expenses to their energy providers, while more than nine million have had to handle the effects of receiving one or more incorrect energy bills in the past two years.

uSwitch's director of consumer policy, Ann Robinson, commented: "Suppliers are starting to get the message across to consumers that it is in their best interests to supply up-to-date meter readings."

Recently, uSwitch found that decreases in energy prices are shaving £41 a year off the average household's bill.

But the £381 rise in bills over 2008 means that this reduction is only 11 per cent of the overall increase.
