Credit card advice for holidaymakers

When shopping and dining abroad, it may be easier to pay one's way with plastic, rather than carrying wads of currency about.

However, credit cards are not immune to security risks, which is why Visa Europe has issued some advice to those planning to use them while on holiday.

Whenever a transaction takes place, shoppers are advised to check the amount they are asked to pay. Once the payment gone through, they should then retain the receipt so that they can cross-reference with card statements when back in the UK.

Fiona Wilkinson, senior vice president at Visa Europe, said that writing down one's pin is another mistake which people should avoid.

And she added: "Try to keep different cards in separate places - that way you won't lose everything if something goes wrong."

In other credit card news, the number of Visa transactions at travel agencies and operators remained static during the first quarter of 2009, the association revealed.
