Cash incentives offered to new car buyers

Alistair Darling announced yesterday that the government will offer cash incentives to motorists who choose to buy new cars, in an effort to help the flagging vehicle manufacturing industry.

The scheme will see drivers able to claim a grant of up to £2,000 towards the purchase of a new vehicle if they decide to trade in an old car for a newer, more fuel efficient model.

It is hoped that the initiative will help the UK cut its overall carbon emissions as well as providing a much-needed boost for the car industry.

A similar scheme is currently operating in Germany, where statistics published by uSwitch.com suggest they have helped boost the car manufacturing market by 39.9 per cent.

Recently, the government announced it would offer £5,000 grants to people in the UK who choose to buy electric-powered cars.
