Electronic goods 'may attract burglars'

Leaving electronic goods visible in house windows may attract burglars, recent research has suggested.

The study, conducted by the household contents insurance provider Norwich Union, reveals that games, consoles and DVDs make up around two-thirds of the items stolen in domestic break-ins in the UK.

Computers, cameras and mobile phones are also popular targets for thieves according to Norwich Union's statistics, making up nine per cent, 11 per cent and five per cent of the overall total respectively.

Simon Warsop, director of home pricing at Norwich Union, said: "Ensuring windows and doors are properly locked, sheds are secured and properties kept in good order can all deter the opportunist burglars who are looking to make a profit from your home."

Recently, home secretary Jacqui Smith announced that some people in the UK will be given government vouchers to be used on upgrading their locks and home security measures.
