Brits 'counting pennies to save pounds'

Many people in the UK are saving their pennies during the credit crunch, according to a new study, in the expectation that this will help them make significant savings in the long run.

The research, conducted by the price comparison site uSwitch.com, revealed that 52 per cent of Brits are now stashing their pennies in a piggy bank rather than letting them fall down the back of the sofa.

More than one-third of the people surveyed told uSwitch.com they are now more likely to stop and pick up small change on the street than they were a year ago.

Louise Bond, personal finance manager at uSwitch.com, said: "The economic slump has created an epidemic of bag a bargain consumers, all taking measures to recession-proof their pockets."

Recently, research by Sainsbury's Home Insurance revealed that many people are now doing jobs around the home themselves, rather than hiring plumbers or other trained professionals in a bid to save money.
