Moneysupermarket.com: Car insurance industry rife with discrimination

Moneysupermarket.com has claimed that the car insurance industry is rife with age discrimination after research conducted recently revealed that young drivers pay more for their insurance.

The company found that a 17-year-old male living in Lancaster would pay 52 per cent more for his car insurance than he would if he was just one year older.

For women drivers, the change is even more marked. Moneysupermarket.com found that a 17-year-old girl can expect to pay 57 per cent more on her car insurance premiums than her 18-year-old counterpart.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Using age as a broad brush for evaluating risk has been a bugbear for […] younger drivers for years.

"Ultimately, I think people should be treated fairly based on their own individual risk profile."

Recently, the government announced the launch of an Equalities Bill, although the anti-discrimination clauses included would not extend to car insurance quotes.
