No frills shopping 'more popular'

Abbey has conducted research which shows that increasing numbers of people in the UK are prepared to adopt a no frills approach when shopping as a way of saving money.

A survey by the bank found that 58 per cent of people in the UK are now more likely to buy basic goods than they were a year ago.

This trend is particularly prevalent in young people, with 63 per cent of those under 20 saying they are more likely to choose no frills alternatives because of the credit crunch. Women are more likely than men to buy basics.

Roger Lovering, managing director of Abbey Credit Cards, said: "It's no surprise to see Britons reassessing their spending habits at a time when every penny counts, and it's encouraging that so many of us are embracing the no frills lifestyle."

Abbey is part of the Santander group, which has around 14,000 branches worldwide.
