The Motley Fool offers investment advice

The Motley Fool, a financial advice website, has advised investors in the UK to take currency considerations into account when choosing which stocks and shares to purchase.

According to the website, nine companies on the FTSE 100 index are planning on upping the dividends they pay to shareholders by 20 per cent this year.

However, it revealed that the majority of these companies are primarily dollar earners, meaning that the increase will be relative rather than absolute, thanks to the current weakness of the dollar against the pound.

David Kuo, director at the Motley Fool, said: "Currently, there are inconsistencies in the market, which can be misleading for investors looking for income.

"So, it pays to check around before we leap if we are to avoid the pitfalls."

Recently, investors who bet on pharmaceutical companies have been doing well as the threat of the swine flu epidemic is pushing many of their share prices up.
