Which? calculates cost of service stations

Which? has conducted a survey of motorway service stations which reveals that it may be cheaper for motorists to shop for snacks before they set off on long journeys.

The consumer magazine visited 51 service stations across the UK and found that some items like bottled water can be up to four times more expensive in service stations than in normal supermarkets.

Which? found that a basket of five items costing £5.48 at Sainsbury's cost more than £10 in some service stations and that Diesel could be up to 13 pence per litre more expensive at motorway petrol stations.

Richard Headland, editor of Which? Car, said: "If you're trying to save this summer, buy food and drinks from a supermarket in advance and fill up your car from your cheapest local fuel station before you leave home."

Recently however, the AA advised people that stopping on long journeys can help prevent accidents.
