Sainsbury's Home Insurance calculates cost of average household's contents

Sainsbury's Home Insurance has conducted research which calculates that the cost of replacing an average household's contents following a fire or other major disaster would be around £45,000.

The company estimated that around 27 per cent of most households' contents' value is held in the living room.

Master bedrooms are also generally packed with valuable goods, with clothes, shoes and furniture amounting to an average of around £5,900, or 17 per cent of the total worth of homeowners' possessions.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance Manager, said: "It's staggering when you tot up all the contents in your home, just how much it would cost to replace them all should the unthinkable happen."

Recent research by Abbey Home Insurance revealed that the recession is likely to cause an increase in the number of domestic break-ins, as desperation born of poverty pushes more people into crime.
