The price comparison website said that the decision, which also saw the utility company launching the cheapest tariff in the UK, may create competition and cause other companies to lower their prices as well.
Research by uSwitch.com revealed that the average household bill for a dual fuel British Gas customer will now drop from £1,240 to £1,194.
However, this is still 31 per cent higher than the average bill of £912 on the 1st January 2008, thanks to rises in the price of electricity and gas last year.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said: "This cut will be some relief for those British Gas customers who are struggling to pay bills - it makes British Gas cheaper than any other electricity supplier in the UK."
Most UK utility companies hiked their prices last year as the world price of oil peaked at around $147 (£97) a barrel.
