Households 'go green to save money'

Research conducted by uSwitch.com has revealed that 78 per cent of households in the UK are taking steps to cut their day-to-day energy usage.

While the measures may result in more efficient, greener households, the principal drive behind the move for 36 per cent of people is the savings they can make on their bills. By comparison, nine per cent said it was driven by environmental concerns.

The price comparison site found that 91 per cent of homeowners now switch off lights when not needed and 79 per cent only fill the kettle with the required amount of water.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said: "Consumers are reacting to the recession and the high cost of energy by cutting back on energy usage."

Recently, research by Sainsbury's Home Insurance revealed that homeowners are reacting to the recession by adopting a DIY approach to fixing problems, rather than calling in trained plumbers or builders.
