Travel insurance customers urged to prioritise medical cover

Holidaymakers searching for travel insurance quotes ought to consider medical cover above all types of protection.

Perry Wilson, founder of InsureandGo, said that medical cover should be the "biggest point of call" for anyone taking out travel insurance.

Other kinds of cover will be less important, depending on the circumstances, he explained. For example, lost luggage insurance may not be as important for someone taking a city break in France as it would be for someone travelling long-haul.

Similarly, loss of money is unlikely to be as big a concern for those taking short trips, while flight cancellations may not be as much of a worry if the flight was cheap in the first place.

"The main crux of it is medical problems. People don't understand that when they go abroad, especially Europe, they'll patch you up but you won't get a free ticket home," advised Mr Wilson.

Research by Sainsbury's Travel shows that there were 1.3 million people between April 2008 and April 2009 who travelled abroad but did not tell their insurer about pre-existing medical conditions.
