Cashless society 'is a long way off' predicts APACS

As the latest statistics from the UK's trade association for payments show that debit cards were the favoured payment method of Brits during the first quarter of 2009, a spokesperson from the organisation has said that it will be a long time before we become a completely cashless society.

Brits who love the sound of coins in their pockets need not worry too soon, says Sandra Quinn from APACS – the organisation is "certainly not predicting [a] cashless [society] for a very long time".

APACS' most recent figures show that the umber of debit and credit card purchases hit 1.9 billion during the first quarter, which equates to a value of £94.20 billion.

However, Ms Quinn furthered: "People feel comfortable with cash and will continue to use cash – it's a very good way of knowing exactly how much money you have and haven't got."

Brits would miss office whip rounds, going to fun fairs, giving children their pocket money and tipping waiters and taxi drivers if we were to move completely to plastic payments, according to research carried out by the Bank Machine.
