Brits 'shunning credit for debit cards'

British consumers are being more sensible in their spending habits and turning from a culture of paying for things with credit cards to buying things they know they can afford with their debit cards.

This is according to Sandra Quinn, director of communications for APACS, the UK's trade association for payments, whose recent statistics show that debit cards accounted for 74.5 per cent of all purchases during the first quarter of 2009.

Ms Quinn believes that this is due to people "spending what they have rather than what they can borrow".

She added that people are concentrating on "what you want to spend the money that you have, rather than money you think you might have in the future".

A recent poll conducted by Bank Machine found that, if Brits turned to a completely cashless society, the things they would miss the most are shopping at markets, buying newspapers, eating at greasy spoon cafes and attending community fundraising events.
