As the bank holiday approaches, British motorists planning to get behind the wheel while abroad have been advised to check their car insurance policies thoroughly by uSwitch.com.

This is because one in five believes that the policies they have at home also apply while abroad, a poll by the comparison and switching website has found.

It also discovered that 22 per cent of respondents think the extent of cover they receive is the same abroad as it is in the UK, although they admit that they have not checked this thoroughly.

The website's research found that most insurers have recently increased the number of days drivers are insured abroad for free, but some only allow their customers three days cover as part of their standard policies while abroad.

Insurance expert at uSwitch Mark Monteiro said: "Avoiding any insurance mishaps when driving overseas is simple - just make sure you set time aside before your trip to contact your insurer."

This could be useful advice, considering that Brits are unlikely to fall out of love with Europe in the future despite the strengthening euro, according to managing director for Holiday-Rentals.co.uk Courtney Wylie.
