MoneySupermarket.com: British motorists fronting car insurance policies

Many British motorists are breaking the law by fronting - the practice of declaring their parents to be the main drivers of their own cars to save cash on insurance - it has been claimed.

According to a new survey conducted by price comparison site MoneySupermarket.com, 19 per cent of respondents are considering or have already added their child to their car insurance as a second driver when they are actually the owner or main user of the vehicle.

The data also shows that there is still uncertainty among motorists as to whether fronting breaks the law or not, as 31 per cent think that it is legal and 35 per cent said that they are unsure.

Head of motor insurance at the website Steve Sweeney said the practice most certainly is illegal and also "a dangerous move".

He added: "It may save you some money but if caught, your insurance will be invalidated and a younger driver could face court, charged with driving without insurance.

Among the other firms to warn against the dangers of fronting is Zurich, which reminded motorists that it can result in both parents and their children being charged with insurance fraud.
