ASDA: average British family £3 better off this year

The average British family is £3 in pocket in April compared to the same time last year, research carried out by supermarket chain ASDA has revealed.

According to the ASDA income tracker, this is the first time the results have displayed positive developments since January.

It found that the average household had £166 to spend weekly in April 2009, up by 1.8 per cent compared to April 2008.

This is thought to be due to factors such as lower mortgage repayments, energy and food bills bringing down costs for families and leaving extra pennies in their pockets.

Overall, households in the southwest were found to be better off, with a £5 increase since last year, while Londoners saw a gain of just £1.

Perhaps unexpectedly, 4.3 million Brits feel they are actually benefitting from the recession due to aspects such as lower mortgage repayments and shops competing to tempt them with heavily discounted prices, according to a poll by uSwitch.com.
