Listening to football while driving 'increases chance of crashing' finds esure study

Football fanatics have been warned that listening to their favourite team compete over the radio while they are driving could lead them to crash their vehicles, causing them injuries and raising their car insurance premiums.

According to research commissioned by esure and undertaken by the University of Leicester, individuals in a simulator who listened to football games had a greater tendency to speed, overtake and tailgate other cars.

As part of the study, 12 motorists were monitored while listening to football matches and it was discovered that their behaviour fluctuated according to key points in the games.

Professor Michael J Pont from the university explained: "It is widely accepted the distraction of talking on a mobile phone may lead to accidents, but other activities may have a similar impact. Football fans should ask someone else to drive during important games."

AA car insurance research revealed in February that out of eight insurers, one refused to insure people with mobile phone convictions and the other seven increased their premiums between 4.2 and 18.1 per cent.
