OFT: Beware of car-matching scams which cost £3m annually

British motorists have been warned to be on their guard against a car-selling scam which costs consumers around £3 million annually.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has highlighted a lucrative scam which sees cold callers offer consumers the chance to match the price of their cars with those of definite buyers after placing an ad in a newspaper or online.

Following this, they are asked to pay an upfront fee for the matcher before the sale. However, it then emerges that typically, there are no buyers waiting and contracts cannot be cancelled with the vehicle matcher and any money paid is gone for good.

According to Consumer Direct, 1,600 private sellers reported having been duped by such a scheme, though it predicts that the actual figure of those affected is much higher.

Those motorists who do hang onto their cars have been advised not to listen to their favourite football team while on the move, as a new study by the University of Leicester found that they are more likely to drive erratically should they tune in.
