Sainsbury's Finance: Millions of Brits to buy second-hand cars this summer

According to new figures from Sainsbury's Finance, 4.5 million Britons plan to purchase a second-hand car within the next few months.

The survey's statistics also reveal that motorists plan to spend an average of £4,487 each - which equates to a collective £20.06 billion.

This represents a fall of 21 per cent of people who planned to spend on a second-hand car during the six months to February 2009.

Overall, 16 per cent of those who plan to buy a second-hand vehicle live in Wales, 14 per cent in the West Midlands and 12 per cent in the north-west of England.

Steven Baillie, head of Sainsbury's Loans, commented: "It's important buyers remember to haggle when negotiating any car purchase, as haggling can save the buyer hundreds or evens thousands of pounds."

Last week, those who want to revamp their wheels were warned by uSwitch.com that adding flashy extras to a car - such as tinted windows and spoilers - can significantly increase motor insurance fees.
