Defra: More effective eco-design will save UK £900m

The UK department for the environment, food and rural affairs (Defra) has said that the smarter design of eco-products in the future will help save the country around £900 million in the long-term.

Defra has outlined this theory in a new paper submitted for a consultation today, which states that, as well as offering increased protection for the environment, more efficiently designed energy products will save the country a significant amount of money.

This involves adhering to EU regulations on the subject, including the introduction of minimum energy standards and labels for products such as washing machines, refrigerators and televisions.

Dan Norris, the UK's new environment minister, said: "It is really important that we hear from businesses and manufacturers to get a well rounded view of how we can enforce and check on the energy standards of products."

Defra's overall aim is to work towards establishing a "healthy environment" for Britons and future generations.
