UK organisations 'will be legally responsible' to end child poverty

As part of an aim set out by the Blair government to end child poverty in the UK by 2020, it has been announced that local authorities, services and the government will be held legally responsible for the abolition of child poverty.

Under the terms of a new bill, which is due to be published this week, organisations such as the NHS, the police and local councils will be expected to lend support as far as it is possible to families living below the poverty line.

Work and pensions secretary Yvette Cooper said that this is a challenge that the current government is determined to tackle.

"It holds current and future government's feet to the flames and won't allow any government to quietly forget about child poverty or walk away," she explained.

Statistics compiled by the End Child Poverty campaign - which is made up of various high-profile groups in the UK - show that Britain has one of the worst child poverty rates among the world's developed countries.
