More Than: Liverpool safest place to leave a bike

Research undertaken by More Than has found that Liverpool is the safest city in which to leave a bicycle without fear of it being stolen.

In findings which go against the grain of common stereotypes, the north-west city was discovered by the study to be the location where it took opportunistic thieves the longest - nearly four hours - to steal a brand new unguarded bike.

At the other end of the spectrum, London was found to be the worst city for bike theft, with the planted item being stolen after just 17 minutes.

In Birmingham, it took one hour and 55 minutes for a new bike to be stolen, while in Manchester this was raised to three hours ten minutes. The national average was found to be two hours and 22 minutes.

Meanwhile, one high-profile figure to become a victim of bicycle theft is Conservative leader David Cameron, whose bike was stolen in May for the second time in a ten-month period.
