The pound 'has fallen significantly in last year'

British holidaymakers have been losing out this year when it comes to their spending money, as the pound has slid noticeably against some currencies since 2008, it has been discovered.

The latest research from Sainsbury's Finance Travel Money has found that within the last year, the pound has fallen in value by 17.7 per cent against the US dollar, 15.5 per cent against the South African rand and 14.99 per cent against the Thai bhat.

It also showed that the only currency sterling has made gains on within the last 12 months is the Turkish lira - at a rate of 2.10 per cent.

Sam Marrs, head of the firm, said that holidaymakers are having to save more for their trips in 2009 than they did last year.

"If you wanted to take away US$500, it will cost you almost £55 more to buy this amount of currency than it did this time last year," he highlighted.

Earlier this month, the pound hit a seven-month high against the dollar.
