Responding to insurance provider Aviva's most recent healthcare report, nine out of ten GPs expect an increase in the number of people suffering from stress in the workplace due to the recession.
"In 2007-08, a total of 13.5 million working days were lost to work-related stress, depression and anxiety," said James Draper, a principal consultant for ARMS.
He added that the Trades Union Congress has warned that the recession is resulting in four million people in the UK working more than 48 hours a week, with some even working over 60 hours.
Almost two-thirds of employers have altered the working patterns of their staff since the onset of the recession, according to the CBI.
This could be a positive thing, it adds, as often these relate to greater uptake of flexible working schedules among businesses.
