Saga: Put down the hammer and check your insurance

Saga Insurance is urging its customers to think twice before getting out their hand drills and make sure that their homes are properly insured for any disasters that may ensue.

According to a poll conducted by the group, 21 per cent of those aged under 50 have had to call in a professional to fix a botched DIY job.

Among those aged 50 and over, 31 per cent claimed to have injured themselves while performing jobs around the house - three per cent of who required hospital treatment.

"Homeowners should check they have accidental damage cover as part of their home insurance, just in case their DIY dreams turn in to DIY disasters," advised Saga's executive chairman Andrew Goodsell.

In April, the results of a poll conducted by Sainsbury's found that Brits are increasingly turning to DIY to save some pennies amid the credit crunch.
