Energy bills 'are confusing consumers'

Energy bills are baffling Brits as many find the information within them confusing and inaccessible, it has been discovered.

The most perplexing are energy, water and home telecoms bills, according to a poll conducted by uSwitch.com, whereas the ones consumers understand the most include credit card, store card and council tax bills.

Building society statements are easy to comprehend, according to 72 per cent of respondents, while 59 per cent scratch their heads at home telephone and broadband bills.

"A well-written, clear and concise bill should leave consumers feeling empowered and in control, not bemused," said Anne Robinson, director of consumer policy for uSwitch.com.

Last week, the price comparison site calculated that the average UK energy bill will reach £4,000 annually within the next ten years.
