Average British garden 'could contain £2,000 worth of goods'

The average British family's back garden could be filled with £1,500 worth of goods, a figure which soars to £2,000 should items such as children's toys be included.

Legal & General has pointed out that though most people concentrate on having their homes, vehicles and lives insured, it is just as important for gardens to be covered as their contents can be worth more than people assume.

Research from the group found that garden furniture is worth an average of £300, while barbecues are worth an average of £125, ornamental pots £120, while garden tools and lawnmowers are worth an average of £180 and £130 respectively.

"It is easy to forget the items we have in our gardens or outbuildings and just how their value may really add up," stated Garry Skelton, marketing director for Legal & General's general insurance business.

Research undertaken by CompareTheMarket.com last year found that one-quarter of Brits fail to include items such as barbecues, garden furniture and plants in their home insurance policies.
