Roaming charges 'to be slashed by 60%'

Mobile phone network providers have promised British holidaymakers that the cost of using their mobile phones abroad will be slashed by up to 60 per cent this summer.

From today, an EU ruling which stated that caps should be placed on the cost of calls and sending text messages across Europe is expected to be passed on to consumers.

As a result, the price of sending a text message between EU countries will fall from 25 pence to ten pence plus VAT.

Making a call should cost no more than 37 pence a minute including VAT, a figure which is set to fall to 30 pence by 2011.

Welcoming the news, Viviane Reding, EU telecoms commissioner, stated: "The roaming rip-off is coming to an end."

In May, Vodafone abolished roaming charges for its customers travelling within Europe, offering its customers the chance to call friends and family in other countries on the continent for the same price as a UK phonecall.
