One in seven gardens targeted by thieves, finds Virgin Money

Virgin Money has conducted research which shows that British homeowners spend more than £4 billion annually on their prized gardens - but often fail to protect them with adequate insurance cover.

According to the group, one in seven gardens is targeted by thieves every year. It also cites figures from Garden Security, which found that more than 5,000 homeowners have items stolen from their outdoor areas every week.

Despite this, the firm believes, people are not working to ensure their gardens and the items in them are fully covered by insurance.

Spokesman for Virgin Money Grant Bather said that people often assume that things they leave in their own back gardens are safe.

"Sadly with garden theft on the rise that is not the case and you need to have adequate insurance in place for everything from the garden gnomes to the barbecue and bikes," he explained.

Last month, GoCompare.com research revealed that almost one-quarter of British homeowners have fallen victim to garden-related thefts.
