AA: Combined home and contents insurance may not be most economical

The AA is urging homeowners to consider their insurance policies carefully to ensure that they are getting the most from them in terms of value.

Highlighting that some people go with combined home and contents insurance, it points out that this may not always be cheaper in many cases.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said that a "surprising" number of homeowners would save money from buying policies from different providers "although using a broker enables the most cost-effective combination to be bought from a single source".

According to the Mintel Home Insurance Report of last November, one-third of homeowners have opted to take out home and contents cover with their mortgage provider and continue to do so, though they could stand to save money if they shop around, the expert highlights.

The AA provides 1.6 million car, home and life insurance policies and almost 120,000 loans every year.
