Rich women 'more likely to have sons than daughters'

Women with heftier fortunes are more likely to give birth to sons than daughters, it has been suggested.

Researchers in the Netherlands conducted studies using data from 95,000 mothers in Rwanda, a country where a man may have more than one wife.

They discovered that wives higher up in the pecking order who possessed more money were more likely to have sons than daughters, reports the Daily Mail.

Published in the journal Biology Letters, the study also found that a woman with little or no fortune is less likely to have a son as it makes more evolutionary sense to have a daughter, as she will not need as much strength as a boy to survive and fight for the family line.

It also discovered that these issues are more prevalent in developing countries such as Rwanda, where 75 per cent of the population live below the poverty line.

Celebrity families that feature more sons than daughters include the Jacksons, the Beckhams and the Osmonds.
