Parents 'struggling to find university fees' amid recession

Parents in the UK are struggling to find the money to send their children to university as the recession puts a strain on their finances, it has been revealed.

Research conducted by the Association of Investment Companies (AIC), has found that 74 per cent of British parents say the credit crunch has increased the strain of university costs.

From a students' perspective, 42 per cent believe that it will take them more than ten years to repay the cost of university. As a result, 30 per cent say that they would take a well-paid job even if it means shunning the subject of their study.

"Of course parents are under increasing financial strain, but if you can save for your children for the long-term from an early age you can give them a financial advantage in life," said communications director for the AIC Annabel Brodie-Smith.

Last July, London topped an HSBC table as the most expensive city for students to live and study in.
