Admiral: Rear-end bumps costing £500m annually

Though they may sometimes appear to be one of the more minor road incidents, rear-end bumps are proving to be a drain on the British economy, insurance group Admiral has highlighted.

According to the firm's statistics, there are 420,000 rear-end collisions in the UK every year which cost insurance firms £500 million in personal injury claims and car repairs.

It also calculates that whiplash alone costs the insurance industry £1.9 billion annually.

"On main roads, many drivers don't leave enough space between themselves and the car in front so if that car brakes they hit them in the rear," declared Sue Longthorn, managing director for Admiral.

She added that the stopping distance for a motorist driving at a speed of 40 mph is 36 metres - or nine car lengths.

Earlier this week, MoneySupermarket.com calculated that male drivers pay an average of £17,000 more for insurance than their female counterparts during their motoring lives.
