Yorkshire Bank: North-west most impacted by recession

Research carried out by Yorkshire Bank has shown that the economic downturn has hit the north-west of England harder than any other region of the country.

According to the study, people in the north-west of England have been hit the hardest by the recession, with 70 per cent of respondents saying they had been forced to change their lifestyles since its onset.

Overall, 66 per cent of those questioned said that they have reduced their spending, with a further 32 per cent saying that they are saving to afford for bigger purchases instead of using their credit cards.

Coming behind the north-west as the hardest-hit regions were East Anglia, Yorkshire, the south-east and London respectively.

"The current economic situation has inevitably changed people's attitudes towards spending and saving," explained Gary Lumby, head of retail banking at Yorkshire Bank.

Yorkshire Bank was founded in 1859 in Halifax and now has 77 branches across the UK.
